About Athens Martial Arts

The Mission

Athens Martial Arts International is a business built on the solid principles of its tenets: Honor, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Courage, Community, Strength, Humility and Knowledge. Our mission is to empower member Instructors and students to enrich their personal, artistic, and professional lives through traditional TaeKwonDo training. We also teach safety awareness, attitude, and life skills.

While training authentic and highly skilled TaeKwonDo artists, we believe the highest purpose of TaeKwonDo education is to prepare students for the responsibilities of citizenship. TaeKwonDo is about real and powerful experiences, resulting in the discovery of innate capabilities and a heightened sense of responsibility. To that end, we encourage our students to use their Martial Arts knowledge to improve our communities through one act of leadership, public service, and mentoring at a time.

Safety Awareness

Safety Awareness is important for everyone. It can save your life. The following list of safety tips is a good starting ground for increasing your personal safety at home, in school and around your community.

  • Know how to dial 911.
  • Memorize your full name, address, and phone number.
  • Be able to identify strangers: a stranger may seem friendly, but remember, appearances can be deceiving.
  • NEVER accept a ride home from anyone unless your parents say it is okay. Create a secret code word known only by you and your parents. Never go with someone unless they know the code word!
  • Don't look at the ground as you walk. Instead pay attention to your surroundings and to people walking toward you or around you. Be aware of unusual behavior.
  • Play "What if" games with your parents and friends. ("What if you're lost"...etc.)
  • Wearing conservative attire makes you less likely to be an easy target.
  • Understand what is "appropriate" touching
  • Say "no" if something is wrong. If you're in a situation and something seems wrong, it is wrong.
  • Never be embarrassed to be safe.
  • Look for uniformed adults in case there is a problem.
  • Run and scream if you are in danger.
  • Never walk alone; avoid trails and alleys. Run to a brightly lit area if there is trouble.
  • Avoid loud and unruly groups.

Attitude and Life Skills

Attitude is everything! A good attitude makes good things happen...at school, home, and work. Don't be negative. Have on optimistic outlook instead. Positive thinking is a key to achievement in your school, work, and personal life. Values give us character. Having good values makes us people others respect and like. Make good values a part of who you are each day at home, at school, and at play.

Life skills are the building blocks for success! There is much to gain from the experiences of grandparents, parents, teachers, coaches, historic figures and others. Life skills, academic study, and a desire for lifelong learning should be a major focus for students now and throughout their lives.
